By their own admission, opening Maven was a bold decision from the people behind the new dining venue in Antwerp. It might seem risky to launch a meat restaurant at a time when its consumption is under heavy scrutiny, but if anyone could make it successful, it would be the dream team of renowned butcher Luc De Laet, catering entrepreneur Wim Van der Borght, and the talented young manager Jules Koninckx.
They found a venue with plenty of character: an old warehouse by the Scheldt river. And, with painstaking attention to detail and the help of local installation company Discostore, they began turning the building into an innovative venue. “We stripped everything back and completely refitted it to create a high-end restaurant,” says Discostore Co-Owner, Erwin Nuyts.
Amazing food was crucial to the concept at Maven, and the ambiance needed to be just as impactful. The team wanted music to be an important part of the experience, with DJs performing to create a club-like vibe at certain times. A high-quality sound system was required to achieve this and Maven’s manager, Jules Koninckx, knew who to call. “We knew that Pioneer Pro Audio speakers are probably the best in the world, and our contact at the brand helped us choose the right ones.”
The installation would not be straightforward due to concerns about noise pollution that could potentially leak from the old brick structure and disturb the residents in surrounding buildings. However, using a combination of XY series speakers – which have a focused dispersion of sound – Discostore’s Nuyts was able to contain the audio within the venue. And, thanks to the flat voicing of the speakers, he could tune each one to deliver the necessary frequencies to create a warm sound that fills the space without generating unwanted resonance that would be heard by the neighbours. To create a smooth sound that could flow through the venue, he also added CM series ceiling-mount speakers in areas where a smaller, more discreet solution was needed to complement the interior design. Nuyts describes the resulting audio as, “Powerful, clear and pure with full presence.”
On hearing the finished system for the first time, Maven manager, Jules Koninckx, was impressed by the sound. “Everyone told us we could change the venue from a restaurant to a club with this system,” he remembers. And when asked what it was like to work with Pioneer Pro Audio, he’s equally positive: “They’re very ‘user-friendly’ and we’ll definitely choose them next time we have a project involving sound.”
